James D. WilliamsSomervilleFuneral for James D. Williams, 86, of Somerville will be today, December 27, 2012 at 3 p.m. at Somerville Church of God with the Rev. Michael Gunter and the Rev. Pearl Jenkins officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial will be in Somerville Church of God Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. at the church. Mr. Williams, who died Monday, December 24, 2012 at his residence, was born August 21, 1926, in Morgan County to Alfred D. Williams and Ida Mayfield Billings Williams. Mr. Williams' home church was Somerville Church of God and he was formerly a member of Austinville Church of God and served as a deacon in both churches. He was a member of the Somerville Masonic Lodge No. 721 and served as Mason for 60 years and achieved ranking of Master for 1963/1964. He was a trustee for Priceville School, board member of Parkway Medical Center, member of the Morgan County Industrial Development Board and was a member of the United States Army from1944 to 1946. Mr. "J.D." Williams was Mayor of Somerville for 42 years, and followed with serving on the City Council. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Richard Harold "Buddy" Williams; and one sister, Dorothy Ann Stevens. Survivors include his wife, Imogene "Sally" Williams of Somerville; two sons, Johnny Keith Williams and Lonnie Judson Williams, both of Somerville; two daughters-in-law, Judy Keenum Williams and Susan Carroll Williams, both of Somerville; two brothers, Harvey Dale Williams of Somerville and Marshall Neil Williams of Decatur; one sister, Doris Lazelle Dye of Atlanta, Ga.; and three grandchildren, John Tollie Williams, Catlin Williams and Emily Williams.Pallbearers will be Jason Wilbanks, Don Carr, Sammy Lawrimore, Roger Stevens, Donnie Williams, Jeff Williams and former mayor, Ray Long. Honorary pallbearers will be Mayor Darren Tucker, and former council members, Bob Engle, Robert Maples, Wayne Stevens, Roger McClure, J.V. Wade and Opal Mooneyham. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Red Cross.
