MILLER, James Clement - Suddenly, while on vacation, in his 75th year, James Clement Miller, passed away at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, B.C., on March 2, 2009. Born in Owen Sound, Ontario, January 16, 1935, son of the late Allen and Eva Miller, Jim was raised in Meaford, and spent most of his working career in the family grocery business, retiring in 1991. He won numerous awards for Grocer of the Year, and was a director of the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers. After retiring, he refused to slow down, and pursued several short term ventures, including building and selling children's lawn chairs, and looked forward to his early morning get-togethers with his coffee buddies. Music was a big part of Jim's life - he taught the bugle band in High School (where he first met his future wife Marjorie), had a small dance band in the early 60's, played the trumpet in the Meaford Citizens' Band, for many years, played the “Last Post“ at many Remembrance Day Services, was a terrific dancer, and in later years, was a strong supporter of the music program at the Georgian Bay Secondary School. Jim was a Life Member of the Meaford Kinsmen Club and K-40, and was instrumental in community projects, including the creation of Kin Kamp at Memorial Park, Meaford, in 1961. He enjoyed boating on Georgian Bay with family and friends, and instigated the first September Rendezvous of Meaford boaters. Jim served on Meaford Council, and helped with many community projects, and in later years, worked on the Committee of the Apple Harvest Craft Show. Jim and Marjorie enjoyed many trips together, and usually spent the winter months in Florida, until Jim's health forced them to include B.C. in their cold-weather plans. He leaves his loving wife of 54 years, Marjorie (Hare), daughters, Connie (Brian) Retzer, Nanaimo, B.C., Cynthia, Vancouver, B.C., Linda (George) Boyes, Mt. Hope, ON, son Tony (Diane), Pompano Beach, FL. He will be sadly missed by grandchildren, Ben and Teressa McMillan, Alexandra Retzer, Kieran and Sebastian Boyes, Jenna and Brooke Miller. Sisters, Diane (Iain) Ballantyne, Pt. Coquitlam, B.C., and Bonnie Winch of Orillia, ON. Predeceased by brothers-in-law, Jim Winch, Reg Towle, and sister-in-law, Helen Towle. Cremation has taken place in B.C., and a memorial service is planned in Meaford, in the spring, details to be announced later. For more information regarding Jim's arrangements call GARDINER-WILSON FUNERAL HOME, Meaford 519-538-2550. 11435349
