Jacqueline I. Castner Smith, 76, born in Reading, Pennsylvania, resident of Pell City, Alabama, died the morning of Monday, March 15, 2010. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Reading Senior High the class of 1951. Before moving to Alabama and becoming a full time homemaker, parent, and co-owner in both Coosa Cable Company and Cable Vision Services, Inc., Jacqueline (or Jackie as she was known) was a former pediatric nurse with a specialty in burn victim trauma in her native Pennsylvania. She maintained her licensure in the nursing field, channeling some of that expertise into serving with the local chapter of the American Red Cross as a coordinator and volunteer in the areas of blood drive donations and emergency disaster relief efforts. She took a particular interest in serving members of the US Armed Services and supporting our veteran troops. Her community service work included membership in local civic organizations such as the Pell City Garden Club and the Pell City Jaycees. Her passions and her philanthropy were concentrated primarily in the areas of animal health and welfare, hunger and poverty, emergency disaster relief, ecology, wildlife rescue, nature preservation and conservation, the Special Olympics, and various local arts, theatre, and library programs. She is survived by Arthur Smith, her brother Bruce Castner, daughters Kathleen Smith and Nancy Burdette (husband Adam Burdette) and son Jeffrey Smith (wife Lexie Smith). Additionally, she is survived by granddaughters Sheree Wilkerson (husband Kelly Wilkerson) and Heather Smith (life partner Amanda Wood), grandsons Christopher Smith (wife Brandy Felice), Jacob Burdette, and Daniel Smith, great-grandsons Emerson Wilkerson and James Wilkerson, and great-granddaughter Amelia Wilkerson. In lieu of flowers, if you feel so inclined to honor Jacqueline, please consider a donation to your local humane society with our gratitude. The funeral service will be at 1 o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, March 20, 2010. Kilgroe Funeral Home Pell City directing. Visitation will begin at 12 noon. Interment at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Pell City, Alabama following the service.
