Lt. Col. Jack A. Davis (USAF, Ret.) of Huntsville died Tuesday, June 24, 2003. He was 83 years old. Born in Seminole, Okla., on Dec. 13, 1919, he and his family had lived in Huntsville and Madison since 1964. He is survived by his wife, Betty Trotman Davis; sons, J. Scott and Kevin E. Davis; granddaughter, Amelia K. Macewicz; grandson, Andrew Magness; and stepchildren, Robert, Robin and Bobbie Jean Chaney; six stepgrandchildren; and dear friend and sister to Eileen Davis, Shirley Carpinelli. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen M. Davis, in 1986. Jack Davis enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in January 1941, and was commissioned second lieutenant and assigned to Hawaii as pilot in July 1942. He flew 120 combat missions in the P-39 Alracobra at Guadalcanal. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, a Presidential Unit Citation, the Air Medal, two Battle Stars and was nominated for the Silver Star. He served as a flight instructor and safety officer at Tyndall AFB at the close of the war. Jack and Eileen were married in January 1946 in Venice, Fla. He took part in Armed Forces Day aerobatic demonstrations flying “slot” position. He rose to command pilot before transfer in 1951 to the 18th Fighter Bomber Wing, Korea. Jack lead the 39th Fighter Squadron, flying 100 combat missions in the F-51, received the Distinguished Flying Cross and four Battle Stars, finishing his tour as Senior Ops Officer for the 5th Air Force. Upon returning to the U.S.A., he was assigned as Air Force adviser to the New York Air National Guard. In 1957, he was selected deputy chief of USAF Mission in Havana, Cuba. Returning to the U.S., Jack was appointed direction center chief of the SAGE air defense facility at Grand Forks AFB, N.D. He retired from service in 1961. Jack entered Civil Service for the U.S. Army in 1962, working in the Missile Command’s Targets Office, where he supported range operations around the world. He retired in 1981, and remained active golfing, traveling and as a member of Whitesburg Baptist Church. Betty and Jack were married Oct. 7, 1987. Jack Davis was a member of the Air Force Association and the Military Officer Association of America. He was a member of the Hall of Military Heroes of Madison County. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association.Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Valhalla Funeral Home. Services will be at the funeral home chapel Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Emerson Lyle officiating. Burial will follow in Valhalla Memory Gardens.
