Joyce Hartman Smith died in Greenwich Hospital on January 6, 2009 following a brief illness. She was 93. Mrs. Smith was a resident of Rye for 53 years, and had lived at The Osborn since 2004. She was very active in the Rye Association for the Handicapped for over 40 years, most recently in the swimming program. In her early Rye years she was also active in both the Mother's Guild of Rye High School and the Rye Chapter of the League of Women Voters, to which she was elected Chapter President in 1963. She was a longtime member of the Rye Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Smith was born August 12, 1915 in Algona, Iowa. She grew up in Janesville, Wisconsin where her father was a country doctor and her mother a teacher. Their family lived through "two depressions," the "farm depression" of the 1920's, followed by the Great Depression which hit in 1929. Living through these depressions had a lifelong effect on Mrs. Smith's outlook toward life and daily living, reinforcing the importance of family and community, as well as inspiring her compassion for others. Mrs. Smith graduated from Beloit College in Wisconsin in 1937. While at Beloit, she met and later married William W. Smith. They had been happily married for 63 years when Mr. Smith died in 2004. Along with her husband, Mrs. Smith raised three sons who all survive her; Christopher of Wilton, Connecticut, Theodore of San Jose, California and Richard of Pelham, New Hampshire. All three sons graduated from Rye High School. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service is planned for January 17 at 3 PM at The Osborn, 101 Theall Road in Rye.
