MATLOCK, III, JOHN JAMES Oct. 19, 1944- Jan. 13, 2012. John, age 67, graduated from the University of Miami, where he played football and continued on into the NFL and WFL. After nine years of pro football, he opened Shenanigans, a bar & restaurant in Birmingham, AL. After 28 years he retired to Jupiter, FL where he lived with his son Lucas. During the last five years of his life, he witnessed the birth of his two grandchildren and experienced the joy of being a grandfather. He is survived by his sister Mary Ellen Brewer; son, Lucas; daughter, Shea; and grandchildren, Matlock & Elle Gemberling. Queen Elizabeth was quoted as saying that "Grief is the price we pay for love". John was carefree and compassionate, always willing to lend an ear and a buck...or tell you the bright and funny side of life. John was a simple man who didn't need much, a USA today newspaper or ESPN on TV made his perfect day. We know after our tears are shed, they will be replaced by our smiles and laughter recalling the memories that we shared with him. In recent months our dad accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and secured a new hope for eternal life. We are saddened by his passing but thankful that God has taken him into His arms. He will be deeply missed. >
