John J. Whelan of Brick, NJ, formerly of New City, went home to God on March 26, 2003 after a brief illness. He was born in Garadice, Co. Leitrim, Ireland on January 29, 1936 to John and Mary (McGovern) Whelan. John emigrated to the USA in 1956. He was a member of the Carpenters Local #608 in New York City. John served in the United States Army 1958-1960 and was stationed in Germany. He is survived by his son Mark (Claudia) Whelan of New Windsor, NY, his daughters Joanne Olcott of Staten Island, NY and Maureen Chretien (Brooks) of Montclair, NJ. He is also survived by his brother Mark (Margaret) Whelan of New City and his sister Philomena (Pat) Egan of Honesdale, PA. He is also survived by his grandchildren Darby Olcott, Katerina and Mark Whelan and Aidan Chretien and many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents and sister Joan Whelan and Marie Meagher. Visiting will be at Higgins Funeral Home on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral will be celebrated by his nephew Father Joseph Meagher, assisted by Deacon Lawrence Meagher at St. Augustine's Church, New City on Saturday at 9:45 am.
