Obituary of Joe-W. Stewart


STEWART, JOE W., 77, of Winter Park, succumbed to cancer at his home surrounded by his loving family on January 18, 2006. Joe was a native Floridian born on August 13, 1928 in Pineville, FL and is a descendent of the Creek Indian Nation. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Helon G. Stewart. Joe was a 1st Sergeant in the US Marine Corps who served our country for 21 years during WWII into the Vietnam War era retiring in 1966. He served 11 years out of the continental United States which included Embassy duty in Teheran Iran. He was an enthusiastic student all his life. He went to school full-time in 1966 to embark on a new career in Electronics. He attended Daytona Beach Junior College. His professor's claimed he was a model for the younger students, achieving straight A's while raising a family of three. In 1967 he was presented with "Student of The Year" award for Achievement, Initiative, Participation and Scholastic Excellence. He received a BS degree in Business in 1977 from Florida Southern College graduating Magna Cum Laude. He retired a second time from Martin Marietta after 20 years of service as a Senior Staff Engineer. Today, many of the advanced defense systems he worked on are currently in use, by our military. He was an avid reader with an extensive home library but his greatest passion was baseball and his beloved Yankees. He enjoyed attending games with his sons and grandsons and has proudly passed along his passion for the game to each. He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister and three grandchildren. He is also survived by a son, Michael Joe (Gilda), Orlando, daughter, Myra Lynn Williams, Orlando; and son, Paul Everett (Stacy), Winter Springs. Five grandchildren, Jennifer (Ben), Houma, LA; Rebecca (Ehren), Orlando; Elizabeth, Peter and Thomas, Winter Springs, two great-grandchildren, Ben Jr. and Anthony, Houma, LA, six brothers, two sisters and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Visitation will be from 4-8PM, Sunday, January 22, 2006 and Funeral services will be 10AM, Monday, January 23, 2006 in the Chapel at the Family Care Funeral Home, Oviedo. Interment will follow at Palm Cemetery, Winter Park. Memorials can be made to Toys for Tots or Hospice of the Comforter.
