JAMES W.GRAY, Jr., 84Rear Admiral, USNRGray Truck Line Co. WINTER HAVEN - James Gray of Winter Haven passed away Friday, August 9, 2013 at his home from heart failure. He was 84. A native of Lake Alfred, born December 13, 1928, to James W. and Vanera Gray, James lived most of his life in this area. He graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1946 and from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1950 as an ensign in the United States Navy. After serving in the Korean Conflict he volunteered for submarine service in 1952, spending 31 years both as an active duty and reserve officer retiring in 1977 as a Rear Admiral. During those years he also worked in the family business, Gray Truck Line Co. He was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church, Kiwanis Clubs International and many other civic organizations. James was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Betty Jo Gray. He is survived by his two sons James W. Gray, III Daphne of Winter Haven, and J. Edward Gray of Plant City; his grandchildren Martha Seney Mike , James W. Gray, IV Joanna , Major John Edward Gray, USA Dianne and Brandy Gray. He also leaves behind his 5 great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Ryan, Kyle, Jackson and Delaney. Memorial Services will be held Friday, August 16th at 11 00am at the First Presbyterian Church of Winter Haven. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Boy Scout Troop 121 at First Presbyterian Church of Winter Haven, 637 6th Street NW, Winter Haven, FL, 33881.
