J. Fred Johnson, 66, Leighton, died June 23, 2001, after a seven-year battle with mesothelioma.Visitation will be Sunday, 6-9 p.m., at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia.The funeral will be Monday, June 25, 2001, at 2:30 p.m. at Leighton Baptist Church, with burial in Glendale Cemetery, with Dr. Tom Whatley, Dr. Macon Landers and Brother Charles Williams officiating.Mr. Johnson was a native of Colbert County and a 1953 graduate of Colbert County High School. He was retired from Reynolds and a faithful deacon and member of Leighton Baptist Church for more than 50 years. He was a loving husband, father and Gan Gan.He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Johnson; two brothers, John Johnson and Henry Johnson; four sisters, Alcy Berry, Susie Bond, Oleta Rutherford and Mildred Flanagan.Special thanks to Dr. Macon Landers, Dr. Felix Morris, Dr. Gerald Haggstrom and staff at ECM.Survivors include his wife, Shirley Wimberly Johnson, Leighton; daughters, Teresa Jones and husband, Kirk, Sheffield, Tammy Mansell and husband, Steve, Muscle Shoals; grandchildren, Matthew, Mark and Michael Jones, Sheffield, Tiffany and Stephanie Mansell, Muscle Shoals; brothers, LeRoy Johnson, Leighton, Vernon Johnson, Leighton; sisters, Elizabeth Copeland, Leighton, and Hazel Edwards, Tuscumbia.Pallbearers will be Cooper Johnson, Dempsey Rutherford, Chris Johnson, Doug Flanagan, Willard Berry, Billy Jo Berry, Dennis Skipworth, Melvin Flanagan and Bradley Coan. Honorary pallbearers are the active and inactive deacons of Leighton Baptist Church and Mickey Price.Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
