Irene-Werner Carroll, spouse of Lee Carroll, mother of John Benjamin, died at 95 years old.
March 6, 2004 Irene Werner Carroll, 95, of DeWitt and Skaneateles, died Saturday at her home in DeWitt. She was descended from early Syracuse settlers. She was a graduate of North High School and Syracuse University. There she majored in religion and so-ciology and was elected to the Theta Chi Beta Bible honorary in which she remained active after graduation. All her life she was active in religious, sociological and biblical activities. A member of Erwin First United Methodist Church, she was Bible Study Leader and Youth Group Leader with her husband for well over 25 years. Her work was recognized by the North Central United Methodist Conference, which honored her with the Dorman Award for outstanding evangelism in Central and Northern New York. She was also a Director of Teen Challenge, a Christian outreach to addicted teens. An alumna of Alpha Gamma Delta fraternity, she was active all her life in that fraternity in various capacities. Among offices held were Province Director, Chairman of the National Cleft Palate Project, and Property Chairman. She was a lifetime long distance swimmer until shortly before her death. For many years she was an active member of the YWCA swim team. A full time devoted homemaker and mother, she was greatly loved and highly respected by her family and all who knew her. Her commitment to God was fixed and unwavering. Her influence will endure long after her death. Survivors: husband Lee Carroll, age 99; son John Benjamin Carroll (wife Jane) of Cazenovia; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; niece Betty Jaun; cousin Dorothy Werner Green of Syracuse.
