Irene Ruth Weeks WEST WINFIELD Irene Ruth Weeks, 86, of West Winfield, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 21, 2014, in her home with family by her side. She was born June 15, 1927, in Brooklyn, a daughter of John and Ruth Alafberg. Irene married the love of her life, John Henry Weeks, on February 14, 1971, in Oriskany. Irene was a beloved member of the community of West Winfield, and could frequently be found walking downtown to visit with her neighbors and friends. She spent most of her life taking care of others. Irene enjoyed gardening, baking, and collecting dolls. Survivors include her daughters, Ethel (Mark) Litz, of West Winfield, Shirley (Charles) Schmitt, of Ilion; a son, John (Barbara) Weeks, of Mohawk; grandchildren, Matthew and Bradley Litz, David Schmitt, Jennifer Watkins, Linda Saunders, and Brenda Weeks; four great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; three sisters, Mary Norton and Theresa Lyons, of SC, and Genevieve Liberis, of AL; and a brother, Charles Alafberg, of MA. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, John Alafberg and her precious poodles, Tulip, Bridget, and Misty. The family would like to thank her devoted caregivers, Jenelle, Debby, Carmen, Luba and Tammy. Special thanks are offered to Crystal Ferguson at Basset Medical Center. Her funeral service will be Monday at 4:00 p.m. at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams &Edmunds Funeral Home, 365 W. Main Street, West Winfield. Spring interment will be in Mohawk Cemetery. Calling hours will precede the service, beginning at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, friends may consider a donation in Irenes memory to the Herkimer County Humane Society or the Central Association for the Blind. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
