Irene Winifred Jackson February 16, 1913 October 14, 2011 We celebrate and cherish the memory of Irene Jackson (nee Whitefield) who passed away peacefully on October 14, 2011 at the age of 98 at Royal University Hospital. Irene is survived by her son, William (Susan) of Peterborough, ON and two granddaughters Dr. Karen (Dr. Julian) Northey of Ottawa, ON and Laura (Michael) Lamb of Minnedosa, MB; her daughter, Marg (Dr. Boyd) Stewart of Weyburn, SK and grandchildren Dr. Krissie (Dr. Andrew) Urmson of Saskatoon, SK; Robin (Jeff) Spence of Saskatoon, SK, and Geoff Stewart RAAF of Sale, Australia. Irene is also survived by great-grandchildren Alexandria, Valarie, Heather and Esther Northey; Victor, Zachary and Travis Lamb; Jackson, Abby and Becca Spence; Erik and Luke Urmson; as well as her brother Bernard (Betty) Whitefield of Madison, WI; her sisters-in-law Mary Hastie of Plunkett, SK and Joan Jackson of Humboldt, SK; thirteen nieces and nephews and their families. Irene was predeceased by her husband Don in 2006; her parents John and Mary; her six siblings and their spouses: Jack (Pat), Fred (Kerley), Dora (Michael), Leslie, Cyril, and Aielie; her brothers-in-law: Len Hastie and Dick Jackson; and a nephew, Robert Hastie. Irene was born and raised in Wouldham, Kent, England. In 1932 her family moved to Hayes, near London. Irene graduated as an RN in 1935 and in 1941 she joined the British Army in the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service /Reserve. In May 1942, following two months at sea, she arrived in India (present day Pakistan) where she nursed in military hospitals in Nowshera, Murree, Rawalpindi, Campbellpore, Cox's Bazaar and Calcutta. While in Murree she met a Canadian RAF pilot, Don Jackson who later became a POW in Germany. Irene returned to England in the spring of 1945 and on Don's return to Britain in May 1945, they were reunited. Six weeks later they were married, a union that was to last for 61 years. Don returned to Canada immediately and Irene followed as a war bride in January of 1946. In April 1946 Don resumed his career in the RCAF and together they were stationed in numerous places including Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, France and Germany. In 1964 they settled in Saskatoon, close to Don's farming family. In 2003, Irene and Don moved into Luther Riverside Terrace and enjoyed the friends they met and their frequent walks along the river. In May 2011, at age 98, Irene moved to the Luther Intermediate Care Home and in September to Stensrud Lodge. Throughout the years, Irene was a very remarkable and capable woman and greatly admired by family and friends, but the most important thing to Irene was her devotion to her family. Irene was caring, generous and loved by all her immediate and extended family. She enjoyed baking, knitting, gardening, going for walks and playing games including Bridge. She was extremely patient and throughout the years, she loved spending time with children. Irene always enjoyed travelling and in their senior years, Irene and Don especially enjoyed numerous trips to England and Scotland. In 2010 Irene took her last trip home to England at the age of 97. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday October 18th 2011, at 1:00 p.m. at the chapel of Saskatoon Funeral Home 338 4th Ave. Saskatoon. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Louise Avenue Congregational Church, 1602 Louise Ave. Saskatoon S7H 2R4 or to a charity of your choice.
