Obituary of Irene-Elizabeth McGill


ObituaryOn January 14, 2004, Irene Elizabeth (Hunter) McGill passed away and entered her heavenly rest. Mrs. McGill was a third generation native of Ft. Myers, having been born here April 1, 1918, to Evelyn Elizabeth Lofton Hunter, and George A. Hunter. She was predeceased by her husband of fifty-two years, James Cypert McGill, and her sister Nazen Hunter Rich. She is survived by her children; James Charles McGill (Anne) of Ft. Myers, Roger McGill of Immokalee, Joann Williams (Jerry) of Immokalee, and Betty Wryals (John) of Immokalee, as well as grandchildren; James Charles McGill, Jr., Brenda Davis, Terry Heath, Debbie Bethea, Allen Williams, Patrice Patterson, Roger McGill, Jr., Randy Driver, Narissa Parnell, Nicky Kersey; great grandchildren Matt and Corey Davis, Jason, David and Brian McGill, Ryan and Tori Bethea, Zach and Megan Williams, Angela, Katy, Janie, Lanie Drive, Ray Hockworth, and John Kersey. In the late 1950's, the family moved to Immokalee where Mr. McGill owned a heavy equipment business. Mrs. McGill was employed by the Collier County School Board for over thirty years as a Food Service Manager at Highlands Elementary School, and a Library Aide at Village Oaks Elementary. Mrs. McGill was well known to all and affectionately referred to as Granny Gill by the children at her schools. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Immokalee. As a child she was a member of Central Methodist Church in Ft. Myers, and recently attended its one-hundreth anniversary celebration. She often shared stories from her mother's youth, such as rowing a boat from the family home on Lofton's Island in the Caloosahatchee River to shore to attend school in Ft. Myers. A favorite memory from her own childhood was having lunch with Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Edison on their lawn. Visitation will be held Friday, January 16, 7:00 - 9:00 PM, at First United Methodist Church, Roberts Ave., in Immokalee, FL. Services will be held on Saturday, January 17, 11:00 AM, at First United Methodist Church, Roberts Ave., in Immokalee, FL. Serving pallbearers will be: Jim McGill, Jr., Roger McGill, Jr., Terry Heath, Allen Williams, Ryan Bethea, Skeeter Bethea and Randy Driver.
