Hubert Van Horn, a World War II Army veteran who worked 27 years for Palm Beach Fire Rescue, died Wednesday of lung-related ailments. He was 86.The Lake Park resident and Ohio native served more than a decade as captain of the town's fire department until his 1980 retirement.It was a sleepy town then, with activity not coming close to the blazing fire that destroyed a mansion this week, recalled his wife, Leona Van Horn.The couple, married for 46 years, met while she was a waitress at the old Frederick's Steakhouse on North Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach, she said."He was very appreciative of anything I'd done," she said. "Every time we'd get up from the dinner table, he'd say, 'Good dinner, Mom.''"In addition to his wife, Mr. Van Horn is survived by his son, Patrick Van Horn of Longwood; daughter-in-law Debbie Van Horn; and three grandchildren.A funeral for Mr. Van Horn is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lake Park. The burial is Monday, at the South Florida VA National Cemetery, west of Lantana.Northwood Funeral Home & Crematory is handling arrangements.
