Obituary of Horace Horne


Horace Bernard Horne, 56, of 871 Yarborough Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.Born in Saluda County, he was the son of Geneva Butler Horne Hancock and the late Wilbert Ethridge Horne. He was the owner of W.E. Horne & Son in Saluda, Horne's General Store in Chappells and Horne's Cupboard in Ward. Mr. Horne was chairman of the Saluda County Council, was chairman of the Tri-County Solid Waste Authority Board and was vice chairman of the Upper Savannah Council of Governments. He was a member of Three Rivers Solid Waste Authority, was founding member of Saluda County Ambulance Service, was founding member of Old Town Ruritan Club and was a former member of Saluda Jaycees. Mr. Horne was a licensed auctioneer and was former magistrate for Saluda County. He established the first rural fire protection in Saluda County. He was a lifelong resident and businessman in Saluda County, and was a member of Zoar United Methodist Church.Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Judy Gragg Horne; two sons and a daughter-in-law, T. Hardee and Allison Horne of Saluda and Toby G. Horne of Saluda; a daughter and son-in-law, Sheree H. and Terry Bowick, of McCormick; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Kathy Horne, of Saluda; his mother and stepfather, Geneva Butler Horne Hancock and Ernest Hancock, of Saluda; two stepsisters, Charlyn Staubs of Saluda and Ann Coker of Greenwood; a stepbrother, Donald Hancock, of Camp Lejeune, N.C.; and four grandchildren, Adam T. Horne, Leason G. Horne, Horace Curry Bowick and Kayla Santos.Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Pat McCain and the Rev. Edward Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 tonight at Ramey Funeral Home.Memorials may be made to Zoar United Methodist Church, c/o Nell Gardner, 152 Shiloh Road, Saluda, S.C., or to Saluda Old Town Fire Department, Newberry Highway, Saluda, S.C.
