GAFFNEY, SC-- Herbert Ray Ramsey, 83, a resident of Peachtree Centre, formerly of Maple Drive, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 17, 2006 at Peachtree Centre.Born in Gaffney, he was the husband of the late Dorothy Waldrup Ramsey and son of the late Virgil Ramsey and Carrie Rodgers Ramsey. Mr. Ramsey was retired from Browns Market and Winn-Dixie. He also worked at United Cities Gas. He was a member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church where he was Deacon Emeritus. He was a charter and founding member of Christian Heights Baptist Church. He was very instrumental in founding the Dixie Semi-Pro Football League in South Carolina and also served as past President of Gaffney Big Chiefs. Mr. Ramsey was retired from the S. C. National Guard and was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp, having served his country in World War II.Surviving are two sons, Micheal Ramsey of Gaffney, and Bill Ramsey and wife, Susan, of Gaffney; one daughter, Kathy Frye and husband, Mike, also of Gaffney; one brother, Joe Ramsey of Eufala, AL; and three grandchildren, Rebecca Williams and husband, Lloyd, Brent Ramsey and wife, Rebecca, and Jeffrey Frye. Mr. Ramsey was preceded in death by a sister, Guynell Clary.The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM on Saturday, November 18, 2006 at Blakely Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, November 19, 2006 in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Dr. Clyde Thomas.
