Obituary of Herbert-P. Peters

Herbert P. Peters, 92, of Kennesaw, Ga., died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw with the Rev. Robert Ledbetter officiating. Mr. Peters was born July 10, 1911, in Westfield, Ill., to Dr. Charles C. and Dixie Mae Stone Peters. His father was a college professor and his family relocated frequently during his early years. His family settled permanently in State College, Pa., in 1926. His father took the entire family of five by automobile across America to see California and the rest of the American West in the summers of 1927 and 1928. Herb graduated from State College High School in 1929. It was at SCHS that Herb met his future wife, Maudella Tate, also SCHS Class of 1929. They were married on Oct. 31, 1936. Herb graduated from Penn State with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering. He was employed by Westinghouse Electric in Pittsburgh from 1936 until 1947. In 1947, Herb accepted employment with the Georgia Tech Research Institute and moved his family to Atlanta. Shortly thereafter, he purchased a 90-acre farm on Windy Hill Road, built a house there by himself (with considerable support and assistance from wife Della), and resided there until 1968 when construction of Interstate 75 divided the farm. At that time, he retired from Georgia Tech and moved to Kennesaw where he and Della played golf almost daily at Pinetree Country Club. Although Herb did not take up golf until he was past 50 years of age, among his accomplishments in golf were six holes-in-one and numerous rounds in which he shot his age or better.Herb was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, a past member of the American Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and a past president of its Atlanta section, and was an honorary lifetime member of Pinetree Country Club. He is survived by Della, his wife of 67 years; two sons, Charles A. Peters of Cartersville, Ga., and Dr. John P. Peters of Decatur; one brother, Dr. Max S. Peters of Boulder, Colo.; one sister, Eleanor Boyle of Palm Harbor, Fla.; two grandsons, Paul M. Peters and Clinton T. Peters, both of Decatur; two great grandsons, and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideons International or to a charity of choice.
