HERBERT LEONSMITH, 72 LAKELAND - Herbert Leon Smith, 72, of Lakeland, died of heart failure 7/16/09, under the care of Good Shepherd Hospice. Leon was born February 13, 1937 in Van Nuys, CA. to Herbert and Elsie Smith. In 1954, he married Wilma Jean Smith. Leon was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Irving, TX. He was also a member of the Demolays for three years, Irving Jaycees for 14 years, and was a Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Texas for over 50 years. Leon and his wife moved to Lakeland in 1982 where he worked and retired as a rate clerk from Watkins Motor Lines. He was extremely devoted to his children and raising of his grandchildren. He had a passion for slot machines in Vegas and sports memorabilia. He was preceded in death by his father Herbert Preston Smith; mother Elsie Mae Smith; brother Dennis Smith; sister Jillene Avalos; and wife Wilma Jean Smith. He was survived by sister-in-law, JoAnn Yarborough Maykus and husband Frank of TX; brother Sammy Smith and wife Linda of KS; daughter Cylinda Sherwood and husband Dan; son Randy Smith and wife Jan of TX; daughter Melissa Crager of GA; niece Vanessa Avalos of TX; and grandchildren; Brian Crager of Bahrain, Randy Smith of TX, Jennifer Kramer of Lakeland, Brad Crager of Bahrain, Amy Smith of TX, Ashley Wilson of Plant City, Jonathan Marshall of GA, and Julia Marshall of Lake Placid; great grandchildren: Cameron, John, Brooklynn, and Jaxon Smith of TX, Kenny and Lexi of Lakeland, Raley and Chloe of Plant City, and Austin Polley of TX. He is also survived by numerous nieces, and nephews. A celebration of life will be held at First United Methodist church, 72 Lake Morton Dr., Lakeland, FL., 33801, officiated by Andy on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 3 p.m. He was well-known and loved by all who knew him, and will truly be missed by all who have been blessed by him.
