Belanger, Henry O.Dec. 14, 2007Henry O. "Hank" Belanger, 94, Sarasota died Dec. 14, 2007.Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Toale Brothers Gulf Gate Chapel, Sarasota. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Sarasota. Survivors include his beloved companion, Kay Howes of Camelot Lakes; and his five children, Ron of San Diego, Calif., Denise of Rehoboth Beach, Del., Suzanne Dana of Williamsburg, Va., Phillip of Akron, Ohio, and Mark of Holbrook, Mass.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.Henry was born in Nashua, N.H., in 1913 and graduated from Assumption College in Worcester, Mass., holding a .432 batting average, which earned him a place in Assumption's Baseball Hall of Fame. He married Rachel Dupuis of Gardner, Mass., in November 1941 and entered the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served on the staff of Adm. Kent Hewitt in the planning and execution of the invasion of North Africa and Sicily and aboard the USS Missouri, remaining as Adm. Hewitt's Flag Secretary in London after the war. He served during the Korean War, and on the Joint Chiefs staff in Washington working on the formation of NATO. He completed tours as intelligence officer on staff of Naval District New Orleans and the Taiwan Defense Command in Taipei from 1958 through 1961 during the Taiwan Strait crisis. In June 1965 he retired as a Commander, USNR, from the Naval District staff at Great Lakes, Ill., and moved to Malden, Mass., where he started a second career in education, completing a master's degree at Salem State College and teaching at Malden High School, then with the Massachusetts Department of Education. Involved in Franco-American cultural activities, he was appointed as the state's French Cultural Commissioner in November 1971 by Gov. Sargent.After his wife, Rachel, died in May 1979, he married Alice Perrault of Nashua, N.H., in December 1979 and moved to Camelot Lakes in Sarasota. Alice died in November 1993. He was an avid golfer until recent years, ushered at St Patrick's Church and was a member of the Retired Military Officers Association.
