BENNINGTON -- Helen Ryan Hurley, 93, a lifelong resident of Depot St., died Saturday morning, April 29, 2006, at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center, following a long illness.Mrs. Hurley was born Dec. 17, 1912, in the family home on Depot Street and resided there all her life. She was the daughter of the late John J. and Catherine (Cone) Ryan. Mrs. Hurley received her education at St. Francis de Sales Academy and St. Joseph Academy in Rutland.She was married to Earl S. Hurley on Sept. 17, 1938, at the St. Francis de Sales church rectory. They traveled to the coast of Maine for their honeymoon, where they weathered the hurricane of 1938. Unable to return to Bennington because of the devastation to the roads, they were forced to stay several additional days. Mr. Hurley predeceased his wife in January 1972.In earlier years she had worked as a bookkeeper for Abe Novak and at Hayes and Kane Furniture and later at Bellemare’s Furniture in sales and custom furnishings.Mrs. Hurley was a lifelong communicant of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Church. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters. She was also member of the Bennington Club. She enjoyed traveling and especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.She leaves her daughter and son-in-law, Julianne and Howard Shea of Easton, N.Y., a son-in-law, Thomas Ryan of Bennington, and grandchildren.
