Obituary of Helen M. Ferguson

Ferguson, Helen Marie (prev Young) (nee Pettigrew)Mom passed away in comfort at the Priory. Survived by her children Cal (Nancy), Sharon-Lee (Ken) and Todd (Wendy) from her marriage with Edwin and her grandchildren Spencer (Tanya), Sarah and Heather. Mom is also survived by her siblings Lorraine, Verna, Pat, John, Bev, Sharon, Brenda and Bill, her sister-in-law Eileen, brother-in-law Barrie and ex sister-in-law Vera and their families. Helen also leaves behind long term friends Pat, Phyllis, Erin and Arlene. Helen's formative years on the farm in Biggar Saskatchewan developed her strong commitment to family, pitching in where needed and a great appreciation for potatoes in any form. Mom was a feisty sole and would not hesitate to state what she thought. After moving to Victoria, Helen graduated from Victoria High school and had a successful career with Royal Trust. A talented athlete, mom competed in track, basketball, softball, ten-pin bowling and curling. Some of our fondest memories are of mom schlepping us off to her baseball or bowling tournaments. We had a great time being watched by the 'team' while mom pursued her passion and had some much needed down time. Saturday night was reserved for hockey night in Canada, complete with the mandatory TV dinner. We learned to entertain ourselves with a deck of cards, an eye spy game or a song. Mom's house was always open for friends and family. A game of bridge, cards or other activity was always welcome. Helen's marriage to Peter was a gratifying union in which they both appreciated music, the ocean, travel to Hawaii and the comforts of hard work and prudence. The family would like to thank the tremendous care and love of the staff at the Priory who kept mom entertained and smiling, recognizing her abilities. Mom taught us to play hard and fair, hug each other and love ourselves. Mom, we will never forget your strengths and sacrifices. A celebration of Helen's 84 years will be held at First Memorial, 4725 Falaise Dr. on Saturday, Aug 22nd at 2PM.In lieu of flowers, please support our oceans by making a donation in Helen's name to the David Suzuki Foundation.
