Helen Foster Alexander JACKSONVILLE - Helen Foster Alexander, 79, died Friday, April 21, 2006, at Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Vanderbilt T. Alexander. The service will be at 10:30 a.m. EDT Saturday at the chapel of Brown, Green, Fralin Funeral Home, 5065 Soutel Drive, Jacksonville.The Rev. Albert Bivens Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow at Alexander Family Cemetery in Greenville. Viewing will be from 5 to 8 p.m. EDT Friday at Brown, Green, Fralin Funeral Home. Tillman Funeral Home in Monticello (850-997-5553) is handling arrangements. She was a resident of Jacksonville for 59 years. In 1976, after raising her family, she returned to school and received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Florida.She had also done extensive work toward her master's degree. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Until her health failed she was an active member of St. Gabriel Episcopal Church and held membership in many civic organizations. In the 1980s she was an active member of ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which is the nation's largest community organization of low- and moderate-income families, working together for social justice and stronger communities.She was president of the family-owned business, JVH Power Clean Service, for 15 years. She was an avid reader and a prolific writer. In 1980, she was bestowed a very special honor for her poetry by the famous actor Richard Boone. Survivors include two sons, Larry Alexander (and Pat) and Dwight Alexander of Jacksonville; four daughters, Janie Bender, Linda Sapp and Carolyn Barney, all of Fort Lauderdale, and Karen Simmons of Bremerton, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins.She was preceded in death by her father, John Foster; her mother, Frankie Foster; and a brother, Frank Smith.
