->AUGUSTA -- Helen Emma Smith Johnson, 104, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at Oak Grove Rehabilitation Center in Waterville, after a long illness.She was born in Castle Hill, March 1, 1905, the daughter of Parker Monroe and Alanda (Boyd) Smith.Helen graduated from Mapleton High School and Farmington Normal School and taught school for three years in Skowhegan and 25 in Augusta, retiring in 1968. She was also a great piano player, who often played for the silent movies. After her retirement, she and her husband spent winters in Florida and traveled extensively in Europe. She was a former member of Order of Eastern Star (50 years) of Washburn, National Education Association, Maine State Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma (40 years) South Parish Congregational Church, Cecilia Club of Augusta, Daughters Of American Revolution and the American Contract Bridge League. She was predeceased by her husband, Otis C. Johnson, and four brothers, Thomas, Raymond, Ralph and Clyde.Survivors include her two daughters, Mrs. Philip (Jean) Bird of Waterville and Mrs. Glen (Lois) Carson of Belleair, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Lisa Scofield of Hope, Leslie Bird of Boothbay Harbor, Paul Bird of Bedford Hills, N.Y., Peter Carson of the Netherlands, Beth Greenwood of Alta Dena, Calif., Julie Russell of Pacific Grove, Calif., and Andrea Miller of Clarksville, Tenn.; 15 great-grandchildren; two nieces, Patricia Burdzell of Augusta and Katherine McIlhargie of Michigan, and three cousins, Philip and Larry Boyd of Peel, New Brunswick and Colby Boyd of Fort Fairfield.Mrs. Johnson will be interred in a graveside service at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, next to her husband, Otis, in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Augusta, followed by a private family service in the spring.Helen's family wishes to thank the staff of the Woodlands, Oak Grove Center, and Thayer Hospital for the care she received.Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta.Condolences to the family may be expressed at www. khrfuneralhomes.com. 7195577
