November 15, 2008 Helen E. Doherty crossed over to start the next phase of her spiritual journey. Helen was born Helen Elizabeth Woolman on June 12, 1930 in Rome, New York. She was the only child of Palmer and Beryle Woolman. Her mother died of childbirth complications when Helen was only five years old. During most of her earlier years, she lived with her uncle, Nelson and aunt, Goldie DeRyke. She was later blessed through her father's second marriage, with siblings; Linda Fortino, Palmer (J.R.) Woolman, Bertha Woolman, William (Bill) Woolman, David Woolman, and Diane McCauley. Helen was 17 years old when she fell in love and married William (Bill) Lambert. Together, they produced five children, April (Gary) LaCross, Kim Smith-Annese, Billie Jean (Allen) Davis, Henry (Joann) Lambert, and Ronnie Lambert-Nauseef. A second marriage to Clifford M. Doherty, gave life to Corinne (Wade) Gregory. She also assisted in raising her stepson, Clifford Doherty Jr. While married to Clifford, she worked to attain her license in cosmetology and owned her own beauty shop in Bridgeport, NY. Also, to her credit and dogged determination, she went back to school at age 48 and earned her business degree. What mattered most to her in life were her children; 15 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. Helen also considered Kim M. (Deyo) Smith close enough to be one of her own children. She always went out of her way to help them, even when she did not have it to give. There were days when her children were young and finances were tight at Christmas time, magically, there were always presents under the tree. Helen treasured her fellow co-workers at Walmart, who included Vito, Donna, and Marsha. Most of all, she cherished her longtime friendship with Kathy Hamm, and together, spent time shopping, dining, and chatting about old memories. Services will be held on Friday at 7 p.m. at New Comer Funeral Home, North Syracuse. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m., before the services, at the funeral home, 705 N. Main Street. Now she is flying with the angels she so loved to collect. She was loved and will be missed by all those who were lucky enough to have known her. In lieu of flowers, we know she would like everyone to do something nice for a friend or perform a random act of kindness.
