Helen Fender Carter - GARDEN CITY - Helen Fender Carter, 81, of Garden City, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013 at Spanish Oaks Hospice. She was born in Savannah, Ga., and was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Don Joseph Carter, her parents, Florence Conaway Fender and Noel Fender, and her sister, Shirley Fender Faircloth. Helen attended Armstrong Junior College and received an Associate in Arts in Commerce-Secretarial in 1952. She worked as Secretary of the Industrial Relations Division at Union Camp until 1969. After staying home a short time, she worked part time for 8 years at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. In October 1977, she began working with the US Army Corps of Engineers and retired in December 1993 as the Administrative Secretary for the Colonel. Her husband, Don Carter, was on active duty with the Air National Guard at Travis Field as an Inventory Management Supervisor and retired in July 1993. She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she sang in the Chancel Choir, taught Sunday School for many years, and was very active in Church Activities, and she was a member of the Circle. She was a member of NARFE, (National Association of Retired Federal Employees). They really enjoyed retirement, and they had a house on the Ogeechee River between Statesboro and Oliver, Ga and are right on the river. They spent a great deal of time there. Most of their traveling was done during their working years, and the most interesting trips they had were to London, Paris, Mexico, and Canada. Mrs. Carter is survived by many nieces and nephews. Visitation: 5 - 7 p.m. Tuesday at Fairhaven Funeral Home - Hubert C. Baker Chapel, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, Ga 31406. Funeral Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Pastor Peter Hartmann, officiating. Mrs. Carter will be taken to the church at 12 p.m. to lie in state. Interment: Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Remembrances: St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
