Helen Carter Williams passed away Oct. 4, 2010, at San Marco Terrace. She was born July 2, 1916, to Linus and Jane Mary Smith Finn in Detroit. As a young girl she moved to St. Augustine with her parents and three sisters. Ms. Williams eventually married E. S. Carter Jr. and in the 1940s, together with her brother-in-law, Lawrence Carter, they owned Carter Electrical Service Company on St. George Street. Later, Ms. Williams moved to Toledo, Ohio, where she received her nursing degree from William Roche Hospital. She remained in the nursing profession for more than 30 years as a surgical technician, licensed in Ohio and Florida.Ms. Williams was an accomplished seamstress and would often look at a dress, then cut a pattern out of newspaper and sew it. She was a wonderful "Nana" to her three granddaughters, for whom she sewed, crocheted and knitted many outfits. She also spent countless hours teaching them her crafting abilities, later teaching these same crafts to her great-granddaughters. After Ms. Williams retired from nursing, she worked part-time at the New Smyrna Beach Airport sewing banners that were flown over the beaches advertising local establishments. Many times she could be seen flying with the pilots.Ms. Williams is survived by her daughter, Patricia C. Weddle (Carl) of St. Augustine; her son, Ronald E. Carter (Anne) of Port Orange, Fla.; one sister, Vera Gandee; granddaughters, Rhonda Masters, Laurie Bauer and Beth Roberts, all of St. Augustine; grandsons, Duane and David Carter, of Port Orange; and three great-granddaughters, three great-grandsons, one great-great-grandson and one great-great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by her former husbands, E.S. Carter Jr. and John Ellich, and sisters, Florence Allen and Laura Jane Meyers. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to the dedicated staff of San Marco Terrace for the loving care given to our mother and grandmother for the past three and a half years.A graveside memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at Craig Memorial Park.
