Obituary of Helen Carpenter

CARPENTER _ Helen Maude Professor Emeritus, Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto - Passed away On the morning of December 21, 2003 at Toronto Western Hospital in her ninety-second year. Born in Montreal March 29, 1912, Helen was the youngest of four children born to Robert G. and Janet Maude Carpenter. She was predeceased by her brothers, Gilbert and Burton and by her sister Margaret. She is survived by her many nieces and nephews, her "adopted" nieces and nephews and by all of their children who lovingly remember their 'Auntie Helen'. She has influenced all of us to eat our vegetables and not complain about teachers, professors or early morning lectures when we were so fortunate to have the opportunity to learn. Her passion in life was Nursing Education and she earned many honours in that field. After joining the faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto in 1945, she rose to the position of Dean from 1962-1972; then became Chairman of the Graduate Department, Nursing from 1972-1976. Prior to 1945, she served in an Ontario Outpost Hospital. The Victorian Order of Nurses, the British Columbia Department of Health and the East York Department of Health. Helen's extensive education after high school earned her an R.N. and Diploma in Nursing at the University of Toronto. After completing a Bachelor of Science at Columbia University in 1943, she went on to take her M.P.H. at Johns Hopkins in 1945 and later her Doctor of Education at Columbia in 1965. Her professional affiliations included a term as President of the Canadian Nurses Association from 1960-1962. She received many awards to promote her learning and leadership including fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Canadian Red Cross. On reviewing her many accomplishments, it is evident that Helen delved into subjects with thoroughness and dedications that brought about changes in the way that nurses were educated or that care was delivered. Some of her contributions to Nursing Education were made while consulting in other countries. Her friends and family will remember Helen fondly. Even as her dementia progressed, her command of logical thought and language remained. She was the repository of treasured memories of our youth-the funny things we said and what we were like as children. We will miss her forever. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, 1585 Yonge St. Toronto, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society, a charity she supported.
