Obituary of Harry Watson

Harry Watson passed away peacefully on September 12, 2014, surrounded by his loving family, just shy of his 93rd birthday. Born on October 31, 1921, in San Antonio, Harry left Texas to attend the United States Naval Academy where he graduated at the top of the class. Although a member of the class of 1946, World War II accelerated his graduation. A few years after the war, Harry earned his master's degree in electrical engineering from MIT and received the Rhodes Scholarship in 1948 to study at Oxford University. In addition to his proud military career, Harry used his engineering brilliance in executive positions in the communications, space and intelligence world.Harry frequently said he "struck gold twice". He had 20 happy years of marriage to the first love of his life, Margaret Fulton. The couple had three wonderful children that devotedly stood by his side during his military duty and early ventures in to the commercial arena. At a young age, however, Margaret passed away from cancer and Harry devoted his time to raising his children.Several years later, in 1969, Harry met a lovely young military widow, Barbara Robbins, who also had three young children. It was love at first sight and two months later they were married. Without hesitation, Barbara and Harry adopted one another's children, lovingly blending the children into one happy family.Harry loved sailing, traveling, tennis and a nice glass of sherry. His thirst for knowledge however, was unquenchable. An avid reader and student of word origins made the Oxford English Dictionary, all 12 volumes and 4 supplements, his prize possession.Kindhearted, thoughtful, loving, devoted and a true gentleman are just a few of the words that describe the man that will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 45 years, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister, nieces, nephews and friends.Just months ago, when asked by the editor of the Rhodes Scholar magazine to reflect on what was most important in his life he responded, "my loving family and restoring the value of intellectual honesty into today's society".A private celebration of life is being planned followed by a spreading of Harry's ashes at sea.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a small donation to Hope United Methodist Church Children Ministries, 16550 Bernardo Heights Parkway, San Diego, CA 92128.
