Harry C. Walker passed away in Columbia, South Carolina, on October 29, 2008.He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and subsequently graduated from the Duke University School of Law in 1950. He then began a distinguished legal career in Greenville, South Carolina. After several years in private practice, he served as legal assistant to Governor Ernest F. Hollings from 1958 to 1962. From this position, he oversaw the integration of Clemson University and was otherwise deeply involved in state affairs.He then continued his public service as a city judge for the City of Greenville and later for the town of City View, and also maintained an active private practice.Mr. Walker was the past commander of American Legion Post 3, where he was a member for over 50 years. He was active in the Greenville Little Theatre, where he received the award for best supporting actor in 1952. He also supported the Red Cross, where he was chairman of the Services to Veterans Committee. He was a supporter of the Methodist Home, where he was a trustee from 1958 to 1966; and a member of the Delta Theta Phi law fraternity.He was an active member of Northside United Methodist Church, where he frequently taught the Chapel Class and served on the administrative board and Council on Ministries. Surviving are his sister, Lib Nelson; his three children, Clay Walker and his wife Annie, Karen Turner and her husband Michael, and Michael Walker and his wife Tracey; grandchildren, Wayne Walker and his wife Martha, Janet Wrye and her husband Justin, Phillip Walker, Carrie Walker, Madison Walker, Clayton Walker, Elizabeth Turner, Joshua Turner, Chad Turner, Charlie Turner, Merrill Walker, Benjamin Walker, Caleb Walker and Jesse Walker; and his beloved great-grandchild, Ellie Wrye.Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Northside United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Elizabeth Thompson and the Rev. Jim Correll officiating.
