Obituary of Harriet-Evelyn Johnson

Harriet Evelyn Johnson, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 30, 2012, in Burlington, Vt. A memorial service will be held in Dorset, Vt., in September. Harriet was born in Rockville Center, N.Y., the daughter of Henry and Kathryn Schwindt. She attended public schools and later received a fine arts degree from Brown University. She married Joseph McVicker, had four children and began her professional career as a musician and piano teacher. Harriet later remarried Glenn Johnson and moved to New Jersey, where she raised her family while lovingly supporting the entrepreneurial ventures of her husband, Glenn. Harriet and Glenn enjoyed an active lifestyle, often traveling to Vermont, Nantucket and Florida. During Harriet's life her passion for music led her to perform piano works as a soloist, accompanist and her favorite form, "four hands." Later, she found great joy teaching piano at Kent Place School for over 20 years. Widowed in 1997, Harriet was always surrounded by wonderful friends who shared her love of the arts, traveling the world and impromptu dinner parties filled with laughter. She will forever be remembered for her endless energy, enthusiasm and generosity. Harriet is survived by her seven children and many grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Vermont Respite House, 802-879-0943.
