He was born on Feb. 8, 1929, in Daytona Beach, raised in Port Orange, Fla., and grew up with a love of the outdoors, which included hunting, fishing and golf as his favorite sporting pastimes. He attended the University of Florida, where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and where he met his beloved future wife of 57 years JoAnne (Heller). He graduated from the Southern College of Pharmacy at Mercer University in Atlanta, then started his long career as a pharmacist in Daytona.
