HENLEY THOMAS CARTER Age 77, Clanton, AL, passed away Thursday, October 23, 2003 in Montgomery. He was born December 30, 1925 in Stanton, AL. STAFF SGT. CARTER served in World War II in Company F, 331st In-fantry Regiment, 83rd Division. They landed across Omaha Beach, fought all across Europe and most of the time were in the center of the front line leading the way. They fought in Normandy, Brittany, libe-rated Luxembourg, and the Ar-dennes and faced the German Bulge. They fought in the Rhine-land and were the first to reach the Rhine River. They literally raced across the rest of Germany, cover-ing 1400 miles and 244 days in combat. Mr. Carter was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal, American Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and a Bronze Star. Mr. Carter was em-ployed at TCI in Birmingham, Troy Maddox Motors, Stokes Chevrolet, managed the Dairy Cream on Air-base Boulevard at Maxwell Air Force Base and most recently Hen-ley Carter Garage in Clanton, AL. Mr. Carter was a faithful member and deacon of West End Baptist Church in Clanton, AL. He was an American Red Cross Lifetime Blood donor. Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his father, Buck Carter and a brother Burton Carter. He is sur-vived by his wife, Marguerite Cor-dle Carter of Montgomery; daughters: Dianne Cooper (J Dan-ny) of Montgomery and Sherry Mel-ton (Dwight) of Montgomery; son, Randy Carter (Trish) of Birmingham; and his mother, Ophelia Gay Cart-er of Stanton; sisters: Hilda Griffin (Sammy) of Stanton and Harold Cosby of Selma; brother, Don Cart-er (Faye) of Selma. Mr. Carter is survived by grandsons: Jay Cooper (Susan), Robin Cooper, Nicholas Letlow, Jamie Melton, Ja-son Melton and Wesley Carter; granddaughters: Nichole Letlow and Emily Carter; great-grand-daughters: Caroline Henley Cooper and Ella Catherine Cooper. Pallbearers were Terry Carroll, Gene Carter, Larry Carter, Ricky Cleckler, Roger Cleckler, Eddie Cordle, Her-bie Cordle, and Steve Cordle. Funeral Services were held Satur-day, October 25, 2003 at Martin Fu-neral Home in Clanton with Reve-rend Tony Smitherman and Reve-rend John Gaines officiating. The interment was at Martin Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made to West End Baptist Church, 2005 Second Avenue North, Clan-ton, AL 35045.
