A memorial service for Capt. Guy C. Leavitt, who passed away June 11, 2007 at the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House, will be held Monday, June 18, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home, 511 Old Kings Rd. South, Flagler Beach. His family will receive friends Monday from 12:30 p.m. until time of service. Capt. Leavitt was born in Columbus, Ohio to the late Charles and Ethel Leavitt and moved to Palm Coast in 1975 from the Boston, Mass. area. He was a retired Naval Captain who served for 30 years during World War II, the Korean and Viet Nam Conflicts. Capt. Leavitt was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and a life member of MOOA. He enjoyed reading, playing bridge, golf and traveling, especially cruising. One of his most recent cruises was to the Artic and Antarctica. Capt. Leavitt is survived by his wife of 24 years, Catherine; one daughter, Elaine Clark, of Bradenton, Fla.; one son, Guy C. Leavitt, Jr. and wife, Patricia, of Ijamsville, Md.; two step-daughters, Mary Baum and husband, Jon, of Pennington, N.J., Barbara Gioia, of Manahawken, N.J.; one step-son, James Williams and wife, Tracy, of Great Falls, Va.; three grandchildren; and eight step-grandchildren. Capt. Leavitt served for 2 years as head of all Naval Operations for the NATO staff in the Mediterranean. Capt. Leavitt was a Class of 1943 graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy. He earned a Master Degree from the University of California-Los Angeles in electrical engineering, post-graduate school in Ordinance Engineering and 1 year at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Capt. Leavitt had command of the Destroyer Forrest Sherman for 2 years after World War II. The ship was the first in its class of this particular destoyer after World War II. This was followed by command of the USS Yarnell, a guided missile frigate. Capt. Leavitt spent 13 years on sea duty. Capt. Leavitt was awarded meritorious honors, medals and letters of commendations. Among them, the Legion of Merit, the Navy Commendation Medal with Star and V. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House, 770 W. Granada Blvd., Suite 102, Ormond Beach, FL 32174. Arrangements are in the care and trust of Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home.
