Obituary of Gretchen-Jane Wilson

Gretchen Jane Dixon Wilson, 92, formerly of Kentland, died on Dec. 17, 2009 at Brookfield, Wisc.  Born in Uniontown, Ky., on Sept. 20, 1917, she was the daughter of Ira and Cecil Dixon.  She married Howard Wilson on July 1, 1939.  He died on Jan. 6, 1986. Mrs. Wilson attended Ball State Teachers College and taught first grade and remedial reading in Kentland for 25 years.  During this time she also was very involved with local children's activities in the church and in the community.  Following retirement from teaching, she was instrumental in establishing the Kentland children's library and served on the library's board of directors and as the children's librarian.  A Kentland resident for most of her life, Mrs. Wilson was a life-long member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and bible school, and she served in various church leadership roles. She was a charter member of Kappa Kappa Kappa sorority and held numerous offices and chairmanships in that organization.  She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Wilson was an avid game and card player, and she taught bridge lessons in Kentland.  She also enjoyed gardening and reading, but her greatest pleasure came from family gatherings.  Local Kentland friends always were aware of the presence of her eight grandchildren for "cousins' week" for several summers. Survivors include her son Donald (Kathleen) Wilson of Brookfield, Wisc.; Mary (Robert) Sawin of Columbus, Ind.; Carol (Joe) Johnston of Portland, Ind.; grandchildren: Bradley Wilson and Katharine Otto of Brookfield, Wisc.; Jennifer Healy of Oconomowoc, Wisc.;   Laura Cottrill and Joseph Sawin of Columbus, Ind.; David Sawin of Dexter, Mich.; Julie Johnston of Dublin, Ohio; Stefanie Lorenz of Westfield, Ind.; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a twin sister, Greta Dixon; brothers, Dale Dixon and Glen Dixon; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Wilson; and a great-granddaughter, Emily Sawin. The funeral was Monday, Dec. 21, 2009 at 1 p.m. (CST) with a visitation from 11 a.m. (CST) until the service at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ed van Wijk officiating. Burial will be at Fairlawn Cemetery in Kentland. McMullan-Stitz Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Gretchen was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed by her family and friends.  Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, the Children's Library in Kentland, or to the donor's charity choice. www.stitzfuneralhome.com.
