Gretchen E. Johnson, 68, of New Smyrna Beach, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009 at Bert Fish Medical Center. Mrs. Johnson was born in Dekalb, IL and moved to the area in 1985 from Waukegan, IL. She received her bachelor's degree in education from Northern Illinois University in Dekalb and taught at Gurnee Grade School, Gurnee, IL; North School, Glenwood School and St. Anastasia Catholic School, all in Waukegan. She also taught at Sacred Heart Catholic School, New Smyrna Beach and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School, Daytona Beach. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Smyrna Beach and was a faithful servant of God by giving her life to her church and the education of children. Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Robert E. Johnson; son, Ted Johnson of Wadsworth, IL; daughter, Eileen Johnson of New Smyrna Beach; brother, Michael F. Roche, Jr., of San Diego, CA; sister, Linda Knodel of Lawton, MI; and grandchildren, Mindy, Scott and Sarah Johnson. She was preceded in death by her father, Michael F. Roche and her mother, Betty Fletcher Roche Patterson. Memorial Mass will be 11 AM Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Cremation will be by Dudley Crematory, New Smyrna Beach.
