Obituary of Grace-Ann Brennan

NEWFANE -- Grace Ann Brennan of Newfane died at home Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007.She was born on April 26, 1957 in Kings County, Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Frank and Grace Wasielewski. As a young girl, she danced at the New York World's Fair. She was once given a spoon by her grandmother, who had emigrated from Norway, which she used to dig a hole to China. Her favorite game growing up in Bay Ridge was Stick Ball, and she was noted once for having hit a Three-Sewer (for those familiar with the game). Her father was a New York City detective, and her mother worked for many years in the Empire State Building. When she was a teenager, she moved to Oceanport, N.J., attending Shore Regional High School in Long Branch, N.J. She later attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, majoring in English. She once earned a high mark from a professor regarding a thesis on D.H. Lawrence, plagiarizing him outright to prove that the professor had never read her work. Returning to New Jersey, she met her husband, the late George Aloisius Brennan III. They were married on May 17, 1980. On April 19, 1986, their son Thomas Patrick Brennan was born. They lived in their home in Rumson, N.J. for many years until Mr. Brennan's death. After the death of Mr. Brennan, Mrs. Brennan and Thomas moved to Vermont, where they lived in Newfane. Besides devoting herself to raising her son, she devoted herself to many charitable causes. She loved gardening and cooking and took pleasure in photography. She loved to laugh and found humor even in the most sober-minded circumstances; her sense of humor and willingness to endure great hardships won her many hearts, especially that of her son Thomas, who will always remember that his mother had a joke for every occasion, and from whom he learned the importance of laughter even in the face of great tragedy. Mrs. Brennan's love for her son was insurmountable, and many friends and even acquaintances noticed how her son was always in her thoughts, no matter how far away he was. He will always remember how proud she was to be the mother of a young playwright and burgeoning author.Survivors include her son Thomas of Brattleboro; her mother Grace of Bradenton, Fla.; and her brother Frank of Little Egg Harbor, N.J. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m., at the First Congregational Church in Newfane.Ker-Westerlund and Fleming Funeral Home, 57 High St., Brattleboro, is in charge of arrangements.u
