Gloria Johnson 1922 - 2015 Gloria Johnson of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family and friends, on Jan. 6, 2015. She was 92 years old. Gloria was born in Lansdowne Grove, England, on March 8, 1922, the daughter of George and Mary Hemmings. As a little girl, she and her family immigrated to the United States, passing through Ellis Island and taking up residence on Long Island, NY, where Gloria began her schooling. Subsequently, the family moved between Cimarron, N.M.; Pacific Grove, Calif.; North Carolina and Florida to follow George's career opportunities as a polo pony trainer. Gloria often recounted stories of racing horses and chasing coyotes on horseback as a young girl in Cimarron. After graduating from high school in Roslyn Heights, NY, Gloria obtained a bachelor's degree in drama with a minor in English from Ohio Wesleyan University. After college, Gloria worked for Aetna Insurance in Hartford, Conn., where she embraced square dancing, community theater and many outdoor activities, including hiking, camping, canoeing and skiing as a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club. Gloria met Denny Johnson at a square dance in Hartford, Conn., in 1954. They were married on Jan. 29, 1955, and moved to Whippany, N.J., where their two children, Scott and Sharon, were born. After moving to Summit, N.J., in 1961, Gloria and Denny became involved in theatre at The Summit Playhouse. Gloria served in many roles at The Playhouse, including actor, producer, stage manager and entertainment chair over nearly 20 years. Gloria and Denny were long-time folk dancers and founding members of the Summit Folk Dancers, dancing in exhibitions and for fun in many venues throughout the Northeast. Gloria loved to entertain, hosting innumerable parties in her lovely home in Summit for the Playhouse, Summit Folk Dancers, College Club Gourmet Group and others. She was an extraordinary cook, preparing wonderful dishes from around the world. After moving to Salt Lake City in 1992, she and Denny joined the Cottonwood Country Club, where she took up golf and continued playing tennis. Before Denny's death in 2004, they enjoyed exploring the U.S., Europe and Australia. Gloria is survived by her son, Scott (Linda Edelman); daughter, Sharon (Michael Moore); grandchildren, Christopher Johnson (Katie), Kellie Elliott (Craig) and Kenneth Johnson, and great-grandchildren Jude Johnson and Sara Elliott. Family and friends are invited to a memorial open house to be held at the Cottonwood Country Club, 1780 E. Lakewood Dr. (5420 S.), Holladay, Utah, from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 8. In lieu of flowers, friends and family may make donations to The Summit Playhouse, Attn: Treasurer, 10 New England Ave., Summit, N.J. 07901.
