GLADYS JEAN SMITH Gladys Smith, 47, of Devlin, Ont., will be resting in peace in heaven as she passed away peacefully Thursday, April 9, 1998 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. Gladys was born April 9, 1951 in Fort Frances, where she was raised. In 1968, she met her husband, Philip Fraser, and together they settled in Devlin. Gladys was a loving homemaker who enjoyed cooking, gardening, and fishing. She was a special aunt to all of her nieces and nephews. Gladys struggled a hard, courageous battle with cancer for a long time. She was predeceased by her father, Alex Smith; sister, Lillian; brother, Allan; brothers-in-law, James Fraser, Frank Fraser, and Albert Gretler; and sister-in-law, Kathleen Smitsnuk. Gladys is survived by her loving husband of more than 20 years and best friend, Philip Fraser, of Devlin, Ont.; her mother, Agnes Smith of Crozier, Ont.; sisters, Dorothy Venables (Milton) of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Helen Lasn of Thunder Bay, Ont., Mary Ann Anderson (Jerry), Linda Gretler, and Eleanor Smith, all of Fort Frances, Ont.; brothers, Raymond Smith (Sharon) of Cambridge, Ont., and Billy and Philip Smith, both of Fort Frances, Ont.; sisters-in-law, Frances Barnhart of Winnipeg, Man., Orphie Fraser of Devlin, Ont., Darlene Fraser of Edmonton, Alta., Marie Fraser (Alex) of Brandon, Man., and Katherine Fraser (Fred) of Devlin, Ont.; brothers-in-law, Alex Smitsnuk of Calgary, Alta., and Leslie Fraser of Abbottsford, B.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews, and aunts and uncles. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 11, 1998 at 4 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, Ont. Rev. Frances Flook officiated, with cremation to follow. Friends visited prior to the service. Honourary pallbearers were all of Gladys’ family and friends. In memoriam donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Box 444, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M8. God saw she was getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around her and whispered “Come with me.” With tear filled eyes we watched her suffer and fade away. Although we loved her deeply, we could not make her stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard work hands put to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.
