GLASTONBURY, Conn. -- Gertrude Cummings Collins, 97, a former longtime resident of 31 Marion Ave., North Adams, Mass., passed away Thursday, July 5, 2007, at Glastonbury Healthcare Center in Glastonbury.She was born in North Adams on May 15, 1910, a daughter of the late Owen Cummings and Mary Horrigan Cummings. She attended schools in North Adams and graduated from the former St. Joseph’s High School with the class of 1928. She also graduated from the former St. Luke’s School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1932.She married John F. Collins in St. Francis of Assisi Church on Oct. 10, 1934. Mr. Collins was the owner of the J.F. Collins Tobacco Co. and a city councilman. He died on April 25, 1979. Mrs. Collins was a lifelong communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church. She was a longtime member of the North Adams Country Club and chaired each office open to the Women’s Division. Gert was treasurer of the division for 13 years. She served on the board of directors of the North Adams Visiting Nurses Association and also served as treasurer.Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Lord, and her husband, Robert, and Mary Mazzara and her husband, William, all of Glastonbury; a son, James Collins and his wife, Grace, of Bennington, VT; eight grandchildren, John Lord, Peter Lord, Thomas Lord, Katherine Lord Lane, Timothy Collins, Mary Collins Habich, Megan Mazzara Burns, and Kathleen Mazzara Mahon; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Seven sisters and two brothers are deceased: Alice, Theresa, Catherine and Claire Cummings; Mary Molloy, Helene Quinn, Margaret Kelly, James Cummings and John Cummings. She was the last of her immediate family.A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Gertrude Collins will be celebrated Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Church in North Adams. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams are Tuesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Connecticut at 11 Founders Plaza, East Hartford, CT 06108 or to House of Bread, 1453 Main St., Hartford, CT 06120.
