Obituary of Geraldine Smith


1923-2014 WINTHROP - Geraldine "Gerry" Smith, 91, passed away on August 18, 2014, at Winthrop Manor, where she had lived for nine years. She was born in Waterville, Maine, as the only child of Gerald and Bertha Welch, on July 17, 1923. Gerry grew up in Augusta, Maine, and went to Cony High school, where she played saxophone, and graduated in 1941. She went to UME Normal School in Machias, Maine, to get her teaching degree. "Mrs. Smith" taught at Pray Street School, in Gardiner, Maine, for many years (1st and 2nd grade), then at West Gardiner Elementary School (3rd grade), for a few years, until her retirement. She loved all different kinds of animals and all kinds of music (especially Willie Nelson). She was a big fan of the Red Sox, all of her life. Gerry was predeceased by her parents, her husband, George Smith Jr., and her oldest son, George Smith. She is survived by her next-oldest son, Bradford Smith of California, her daughter, Carol Smith of Winthrop, Maine, her only grandchild, Jackson Smith and his wife, Sara, of Massachusetts, and Gerry's daughter-in-law, Julie Smith, also of Massachusetts. Upon her request, there will be no public services, and a private burial later.
