George-W. Lee, born in 1922, spouse of Janet-Field Lee, son of George and Alicia-Ames, father of Nancy Carolyn and George W. Lee, died on June 26, 2012 at 90 years old.
June 26, 2012 George W. Lee, 90, lifelong resident of Syracuse, NY passed away on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at Menorah Park in DeWitt, NY. George was predeceased by his lifelong companion and wife, Janet Field Lee (2009). He attended Nottingham High School and graduated from Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts. Subsequently he enrolled in the then named College of Forestry on the "Hill". His college term was interrupted by World War II, where Sergeant Lee served in the Army Air Corps in the Central Burma India-Burma China Offensive. During a leave in the summer of 1944, George and Janet Mowry Field married on July 18. Following service he returned and graduated from the College of Forestry in 1947. After the war they bought their first house on Cumberland Ave. and soon after joined Rockefeller Memorial Methodist Church. During his lifetime membership he served on the Board of Trustees and took an active role in their expansion of Kincaid Hall and The Sanctuary. They lived in their next house on Windsor Place for over 50 years. George joined Lawrence R. McCoy Company-- lumber brokers of Worchester, Mass.--following his college graduation. He served there in various roles in sales and management and retired from L R McCoy in 1987 after a 40-year career. In retirement he and family members opened the Muncey Hill Tree Farm, a nursery for Christmas trees, blending his forestry knowledge with the love of the outdoors. George was a devoted husband and helped raise four kids with Janet. They were keenly involved in Church activities and found many great families to have fun with in their neighborhood. During this time they also joined Onondaga Country Club where they found great friendships and shared their delight in a good round of golf. George was a passionate outdoorsman and especially enjoyed his upland bird hunting and fishing throughout the streams and lakes of Central New York. With a summer camp on the East side of DeRuyter Lake he and family bonded there throughout his lifetime. He also joined the Syra- Canadian Club in the 1950s and remained a lifelong member. Forays into the wilds of Quebec were adventures he especially enjoyed with family and friends. Throughout his life he was generous and kind and loved to share his passions with his family- many can say with a smile that Boppie taught me that! George was predeceased by his parents, George Washington and Alicia Ames Lee of Syracuse; his two sisters, Nancy Carolyn Lee of Cuyler, NY and Phyllis Rose Johnson of Wilmington, NC; his brother, David Ames Lee, Esq. of DeWitt, NY. Surviving are his sister-in-law, Brenda Amerman Lee; four children, Nancy Carolyn Lee of Syracuse, George W. Lee Jr. and wife, Cynthia Worden of Camillus, Linda Lee Potter and husband, Bill, and baby sister, Betsy Gail Mielnicki and husband, Mike. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, seven grandchildren and 16 nieces and nephews. The family warmly invites friends and family to a memorial service at Rockefeller Memorial Methodist Church (RUMMC), 350 Nottingham on Sunday, July 1 at 1 p.m., with reception immediately following. Burial will be at DeRuyter's Hillcrest Cemetery. Contributions can be made to RUMMC or Trout Unlimited. To leave a note of condolence please visit www.Burnsgarfield.com
