PETERSON George Peterson was born on November 19, 1912, in Tampa, FL to George and Everlena Peterson. He was the oldest of four siblings, all deceased, Gladys, Douglas and Juanita. He was appointed the Superintendent of the Sunday School at First Institutional Baptist Church of Lake Wales, FL Mr. Peterson was also ordained as a deacon. He served in the US Army during World War II, serving in Belgium, Spain, France, and other parts of Europe. Mr. Peterson received an Honorable Discharge in October 1945. He returned to Lake Wales, FL and later relocated to the New England area. In New London, Connecticut, Deacon George Peterson was a faithful member for over 22 years in Shiloh Baptist Church where he was the co-founder of the Shiloh Gospel Chorus. He enjoyed singing for the Lord wherever and whenever he was allowed. He retired as a union worker and returned to settled in Lake Panasoffkee, FL. There he joined Mount Ararat Metropolitan Baptist Church where he served as: Sunday School Teacher, Director of Education, President of the Local Auxiliary for Bethel Baptist Association of Leesburg, FL and Vice President of the Layman Auxiliary for Florida General Baptist State Convention. At the age of 96, Deacon Peterson moved to Jacksonville, FL to live with his son and daughter-in-law. He joined Saint Stephen AME Church in 2009. Mr. Peterson passed away November 30, 2011. His daughter, Alberta Bostic preceded him in death. Mr. Peterson is survived by his son, Elrese Peterson (Gloria), 6 grandchildren, Dr. Jackie Gardner (Mary), Rev. Wayne Peterson (Patrice), Trevor Peterson, Iva LaTonya Bostic, Oliver Bostic and Frentress Flemming, Sr.; many great-grandchildren; a very special nephew, Jerry Brewington (Gwen); other relatives, and friends. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 10AM in St. Stephen AME Church, Rev. Michael L. Mitchell, Pastor. Mr. Peterson will rest in the John A. McKinney Memorial Chapel of the funeral Home Tuesday (TODAY) from 5-8pm and in the church on Wednesday from 9am until the hour of service. Interment will be in the Jacksonville National Cemetery.
