ObituaryGeorge Peter Johnson died September 3, 2007 after a long illness at the age of 75. George was born at 62 Sanborn Street, Lawrence, MA to William Harold Johnson and Irene McAllister. He was the 4th son for the family. George went to St. Rita's Grammar School and then to Lawrence High School graduating 1949. He enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly after graduation (needing his father's permission) and was sent to Korea during the conflict. At the time he was the youngest man in the outfit. George was discharged from the army and then joined the U.S. Air Force for the remainder of his twenty year military career retiring in 1970. the family then made their home in Orlando, FL for four years and to Fort Myers in 1974. He has lived in this city since.In December 1952 he married Claire Bernard also of Lawrence, MA in St. Patrick's Church. The couple had three children, Sharon born in New Boston, TX, Barbara born in Manheim-Geudenheim, Germany and Mark born in Athens, Greece.Following military retirement George went to work for The Federal Aviation Agency as an electronic technician for 20 years. He retired at the age of 62.In 2000 George learned he had an aggressive prostate cancer that had already metastasized to the bones. For the past seven years with the help of the medical community he has battled the disease.He is preceded in death by his father, mother, two nieces and a nephew. Survivors include his wife, Claire, daughters, Sharon Davies (Mark) of VA, Barbara Merle (Jan) of FL and son Mark also of FL. Grandchildren include Sara Davies Britsch (Matthew) of VA and grandsons, Ian, Seth, and Keith Merle. Survivors also include brothers William, Raymond, Gerald, Warren and half sister Elizabeth (Lewis) Butler.The family wishes to thank G. Allen Ball, MD, Associates in Internal Medicine, Michael J. McCleod, D.O. and Laraine Mouthaan, ARNP of Florida Cancer Specialist, Keith L. Miller, M.D. and Constantine Mantz, M.D. of 21st Century Oncology, Chris J. Marino, M.D., Florida Neurology Group, Bert van Beever, M.D., Urologist, Anthony F. Fransway, M.D,. Associates in Dermatology, Radiology Regional Physicians, technicians and staff, and all the nurses, and other staff from those above practices for the outstanding compassion, care, and understanding provided to him.The Family also wishes to recognize the EMT's Deputy, Paramedics and any others who arrived post death to help. The support and professionalism provided by them was appreciated.There will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be Saturday, September 8th at 1:00 P.M. at Saint Cecelia's Catholic Church.
