George-Oliver-Johnson Sr, born in 1931, spouse of Edith Johnson, son of Clarence and Tomi-Wesley, father of Michael, Brenda and George Johnson, died on May 7, 2013 at 82 years old.
TRENTON - George Oliver Johnson Sr., age 82, of Trenton, passed away May 7, 2013, at Royal Healthgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Snead, Fla. he had lived in Trenton most of his life. He worked for the City of Trenton Street Department for several years. He was a member of the Trenton Deliverance Fellowship Church Inc. under the late Apostle Horace O. Myers who also was his closet friend. Mr. Johnson was a Welterweight and Middleweight Boxing Champion of New Jersey. He fought some of the all-time greats and he was ranked No.7 as the hardest hitter in the world. He fought and beat such standouts as former world champion Ike Williams by a K.O. George retired from boxing and was inducted into the Trenton Hall of Fame in 1977.Son of the late Clarence Johnson and Tomi Wesley Ellis, brother of the late Clarence, Sherman, Jimmy, Charles, James "JD" and Frankie, father of the late Michael Johnson. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 61 years, Edith Johnson, 11 children, Brenda Bryant (Edward), George Johnson Jr., Vanessa Anderson (Marvin), Audie Johnson, Marlon Bennett, Emma Dillard (Arzaga), Mary Priester, Keith Johnson, Phillip Johnson (Tina), Edith Campfield (Brian) and Danita Bell (Eric), 29 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren, a host of other relatives and friends.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at the Lighthouse Outreach Ministries, 715 Bellevue Ave., Trenton. Calling hours will be 9 a.m. until time of service at the church. Interment Colonial Memorial Park, Hamilton. Arrangements are by the Hughes Funeral Home.
