He was 92.Born November 9, 1921 in Norfolk, VA, George and his family moved to Asheville in 1926. His father was a restaurateur and owned several restaurants in the area. Joining the US military in 1942, George was Staff Sergeant and radio operator during WWII serving in India, China, and Burma until 1945. He enrolled in George Washington University in 1948 and graduated in 1952 with a degree in governmental accounting. He married Despina Fisfis in October, 1954, and they were happily married for 60 years.George opened his first accounting practice in the early 1960's and was an accountant in Asheville for over 35 years. He also was a real estate broker and an appraiser for Buncombe County for several years. He loved his church, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and was a member from the time his parents joined in 1926. He sang in the choir for 75 years and served on the Parish Council for 37 years, including 17 consecutive terms. Serving as treasurer of the council when the church was built in the 50's, he wrote checks to the contractors on a daily basis for construction of the church and Hellenic Center. George served as the church's accountant for decades. He was a lifetime member and treasurer of AHEPA.An avid tennis player, George also loved music. He played the violin in the Asheville Symphony in the 1930's.George was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather and was a man of great integrity. He is preceded in death by his grandsons, Pete, William, and Patrick. He is survived by his loving wife, Despina Peterson; brother, Johnny Peterson; sister, Mackey Griffis; sons, Dean (Stacee) and Stom (Kay); daughter, Maria (Jimmy); his nephew Pete, and his grandchildren Peter, George (Anna), Eirene (Travis), John, Nick, and Zoe.The family will receive loved ones at 6:15 PM, Wednesday, September 24th at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, a Trisagion will begin at 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, September 25th at the church with Father Michael Diavatis officiating.
