George John Hurley, 80, died January 24, 2014, at The Pines in Rutland, following a long illness. He benefited from the caring attention, support and friendliness of staff and fellow residents at the Pines. He was born in Rutland, December 26, 1933, the son of Benjamin G. and Stella (Chichon) Hurley. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He had worked at Rutland City Public Schools in the maintenance department and, later, delivering for the Home and Farm Appliance Center. He was a reliable and caring dog and cat sitter for many years. Mr. Hurley enjoyed going for drives, lifting weights, exercising, walking in nature and staying active. He loved animals, with a special interest in wolves and dogs. Survivors include a step-daughter, Dianne Vergi and her husband, Henry Vergi, of Proctorsville, VT, and grandson, Hank Vergi of Milwaukee, WI; step-daughter, Nancy Notte and her family of Chittenden; step-daughter, Jennifer Douglas of Colorado; step-son, Greg Lynch of Rutland, Vt.; and a friend, Susan Toner of Rutland. There are no calling hours. Burial services will be held in Vermont Veterans Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rutland County Humane Society, 739 Stevens Road, Pittsford, VT 05763. Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.
