CURRY, George Douglas - (Recommended for the British Empire Medal) - passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Riverwood Retirement Home, Alliston on Saturday, July 11th 2009 at the grand old age of 96. He was born on May 7, 1913 in Dunellen New Jersey, the son of the late Dr. Emerson and Winnifred Curry. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Lila Muriel (Ashfield) in 2001, his sisters Margaret MacLeod and Joan Howell, and grandson Bryce Hollingsworth. Surviving are son William (Marie), Ottawa, daughters Sharon Hollingsworth (Al) Lower Sackville NS and Deborah Berg (John), Parkersburg West Virginia, brother William of Waterloo, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. George grew up in Dunellen and Summit New Jersey and later Toronto and received his education at Pickering College in Newmarket and University of Toronto. He worked for a time in banking in Smiths Falls and Carleton Place and went on to become a proud career soldier with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps (RCAMC). He saw duty both in World War II and the Korean Conflict, and his military service also took him and his family to Kingston, Iserlohn Germany, Ste. Foy Québec, Churchill Manitoba and Base Borden where he retired with the rank of WO2. Following his retirement from the armed forces, he worked for Base Transport at Base Borden and later the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Korean Veterans' Association. The family would like to thank the staff of Riverwood Retirement Home in Alliston for the wonderful care George received during the last years of his life, and his dear friends Bill and Jo Sabo, who provided him with loving comfort and support when family could not be present. Friends may pay their respects at THE STEVEN R. BRIDGE FUNERAL HOME, ANGUS, on Wednesday evening, July 15th 2009 from 7-9 pm. Funeral service in the chapel on Thursday, July 16th 2009 at 1:00 pm. Interment immediately following at The Angus Union Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) or Royal Victoria Hospital Cancer Care Centre would be appreciated by the family.
