HOLDERNESS - Gail Alberta Willoughby Smith, 65, died April 23, 2011, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, after a long illness.She was born on July 30, 1945, in Holderness, to Hollis E. and Alberta E. (Chamberlain) Willoughby. She attended Plymouth High School, where she met her husband, George Smith.They were married on Feb. 25, 1966 in Plymouth. They lived in Manchester and Sarasota, Fla. before returning to settle in Holderness in 1970. As a young woman, she attended cosmetology school and worked as a beautician and as a telephone operator. Later, she was a medical secretary for several doctors in the Plymouth area, and then worked at the Laconia Women's Health Center until her retirement.She particularly loved her grandchildren and spent as much time with them as she could.She loved to garden and was active at Starr King Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.In addition to her husband, family includes daughter Katherine Sawyer; children Emma and Aidan of Hartland, Vt., and brother Hollis Willoughby; several nieces and cousins.She will be dearly missed by all that knew her. She had a warm and loving spirit. . SERVICES: A celebration of life service is at 2 p.m. Saturday at Starr King Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Fairgrounds Road in Plymouth. The Rev. Sarah Stewart will officiate.Memorial donations may be made to Yale University School of Medicine, HHT Center, in care of Dr. Robert I. White Jr., P.O. Box 208042, New Haven, CT 06520-8042.Mayhew Funeral Homes and cremation service providers, in Plymouth and Meredith, are handling arrangements.
