Frederick R. DowdFrederick R. Dowd, 91, formerly of 6112 Elm Ave., Little York, N.Y., passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2003, in the Northwood's Extended Care Center of Cortland, where he had been a resident since 1995. Born July 10, 1912 in Sangerfield, N.Y., Fred was the son of Matthew and Luella Holden Dowd. On July 24, 1937 he married the former Elizabeth Holmes, a marriage that lasted 62 years, until Mrs. Dowd's death in 1999. Mr. Dowd served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, obtaining the rank of First Sergeant. He was awarded, by General DeGaulle, the French Decoration "Croix De Guerre Avec Palme" (War Cross With Palm) for exceptional service rendered during the liberation of France as well as the Bronze Service Arrowhead for his participation in the D-Day Operation. In 1951 Fred was called to serve again in the Army and achieved the rank of Master Sergeant during his tour in the Korean War. His memberships include the Homer United Methodist Church, the Johnson City Unity Lodge F. & A.M., Otseningo, the Kalurah Shrine, Endicott and the Cortland V.F.W. Prior to and following his military service, Fred had been employed for 40 years at IBM, Endicott, NY as a cost engineer, retiring in 1971. Surviving are a daughter, Barbara J. Gregg of Lansing; six grandchildren, Kimberly and Tammy Gregg, Betsy Golden, Angy Gregg, Tayra and Shayne Fedorka, eight great grandchildren, a great-great grandson and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his wife, Mr. Dowd was predeceased by a sister, Eva Coye.Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, Inc., 5016 N. Main St., Homer, with the Rev. Allan J. Ferguson officiating. Interment in Elmwood Cemetery, Preble, N.Y., will take place in the spring.
